Oil absorbed during cooking, butter under vegetables, sugar in a sauce, broth, dressing, and recipe ratios may not be visible. The same-looking dish can therefore have different ingredients and nutrition.
The exact product or recipe
USDA FoodData Central contains several data types with different sources and portion contexts. Branded values can come from product labels, while other food-composition values may be analytical, calculated, or compiled. Choosing a plausible reference food is not the same as proving the recipe in front of the camera.
Allergy safety or medical suitability
A photo cannot clear a food for an allergy, medication interaction, pregnancy, diabetes treatment, kidney condition, eating-disorder care, or any other individual clinical situation. Four ways to make the estimate more useful
- Show the whole portion. Keep the plate, bowl, cup, or package edge visible when practical.
